FAQs & Tips
Here is some helpful information that provides answers to frequently asked questions about self storage.
Unit size – A quick assessment of the number of rooms of furniture is a good method to determine the size that’s right for you. Even portions of rooms work, i.e. ½ a living room, ½ a bedroom, kitchen & bathroom items = two rooms worth. Use our self storage calculator to help!
Storing cars, boats or RV’s – Edison Lock Up offers over one hundred outside storage spaces for your boat, car, RV or camper. Keep your vehicle in a trusted and accessible place. Whether you need a spot to park your motorcycle or dry dock your boat, our outdoor storage is well lit and accessible.
Length of stay – Storing for six months or less puts a greater importance on quick, easy access, preferably drive up access, without hallways to navigate, or elevators to use. Longer term rentals makes pricing the bigger issue. Our second level units are priced lower, with large access ways to the two door elevator. Since you’re only going to move in once, the additional time it takes will save you money on each month you stay.
Climate controlled – Our climate controlled units maintain a temperature of 60 to 80 degrees. This feature helps protect your stored belongings from extreme temperatures.
When to start – Reserve early. One to two weeks guarantees a greater selection of units. Plan ahead. Truck rentals are seasonal and they are in high demand on weekends. We have access until ten o’clock every night so you can move during the week.
Visit the site – Our office hours are from 8 am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday. We will show you a space that’s right for you. Our knowledgeable staff is here to help. With experience and commitment to serving the community, our management staff has rented ten thousand units over the last twenty years. Let us help pick one for you!
Weather – Check the weather for moving day. Move during the week- trucks are more readily available on weekdays rather than weekends.
Packing supplies – Make storing easier and less time consuming while you protect your property with a variety of items. Prepare your furniture- wax the wood, cover the fabrics, & oil the metal. If you can’t box it, bag it. If you can’t bag it, cover it (see our storage supplies).
Used clothing – Clothing stored for more than 1 year can yellow. Thoroughly wash, fold and, if possible, vacuum seal. This will prevent enzymes from attacking your clothing.
Refrigerators – Must be defrosted and cleaned. Frost free requires three days, otherwise a puddle may form in your unit. Also, make sure the doors are open!
Food – DO NOT STORE FOOD! Even spices can attract bugs! Be sure all kitchen equipment is clean.
